NAACP Underfire For Including Rappers In Image Awards

The NAACP has come under fire for the lineup of Hip-Hop performers included to take part in the 42nd Annual NAACP Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles tonight (March 4th).

Artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Diddy and Dirty Money, B.o.B. and others will perform, present or have been nominated to be honored in a variety of categories, including music, film, television and literature.

The lineup has drawn the wrath of Reverend Delman Coates of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland, who heads up the Enough is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment.

In addition to Rev. Coates, other NAACP regions have received complaints about tonight’s lineup.

“It is a complete outrage that the NAACP and some of this country’s largest corporations would endorse artists that degrade women, use the “N” word, and promote values that are antithetical to the goals and aspirations of most Americans,” Rev. Coates told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

“Lyrical content, not commercial success should be the standard by which such nominations and sponsorships are given,” Rev. Coates said. “At a time when we have witnessed social and political progress in America, it is disheartening to see established civil rights organizations and leading American corporations promote some of the most stereotypical and offensive images and messages in the popular culture.”

Google Imagines the Web Without the Address Bar

In its relatively short but influential history, Google’s Chrome browser has established itself as far-and-away the most aggressive of the pack when it comes to rethinking the way we view the Web. Whether it’s, pioneering “Private Browsing,” finding a way for tabs run independently from one another or pushing HTML 5 bright and early, the browser has inherited its parent’s most cavalier and progressive sensibilities.

Google hasn’t always been known for avant-garde design thinking, (think of Blogger and early Android builds), but Chrome’s ruthlessly minimalist and clean design has been its trademark. Now, after axing toolbars, the bookmarks bar and even the Home button from its default setting, the Chrome team is experimenting with a new version of the browser that doesn’t even have an address bar. That would bring the number of screen lines occupied by the browser down to 1.

Instead of a traditional address bar (already a non-traditional, search-integrated “Omnibox” in Chrome), Google is experimenting with a new system that displays a url box only when the user hovers over a tab. This “Compact” version of Chrome is one of four future options currently being considered by the Chrome team, among which are touch-based and “classic” versions.

The “less browser, more Web” ethos is particularly suited for a future dominated by HTML 5 Web apps like those promoted by Yahoo’s LiveStand and Google’s own Web Store. But the old design adage says “take away until it breaks;” and Chrome’s steady evaporation always runs the risk of breaking the browser experience for some users.

An Open Letter to Neil Portnow, NARAS and the Grammy Awards

In this Sunday’s New York Times, I have purchased a full-page ad as an open letter to Neil Portnow, NARAS and the Grammy Awards. Here’s why.

Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic.

As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West’s Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1984.

Mobile Evolution by Kyle Bean

In today’s mobile phone era, it’s all about iPhone, Blackberry and Android OS, but craft artist Kyle Beans reminds us of the days of Zack Morris and Gordon Gekko with this Russian Doll-esque project that looks at the history of the mobile phone. The models are created completely out of paper and cardboard, pretty craze. Take a look at a video of the project over at Laughing Squid and see if your first mobile made the cut.

Exposing The Hip-Hop Hood Hoax

By Truth Minista Paul Scott

“Mental pictures, stereotypes and fake history reinforces mystery.”
“Why Is That?” –  Boogie Down Productions

From birth ,we are taught to believe myths. We start off believing fables about tooth fairies and an old fat dude in a red suit ridin’ around the hood in a red sleigh pulled by a red nosed reindeer. As we grow older and enter the mis-educational system, we are indoctrinated by stories about a lost sailor named Chris “discovering” America and an “honest”  opportunist  named Abe “freeing the slaves.” We are also programmed to believe the urban legend that the Hip Hop of today comes out of the hood.

It may come as a shock for some but the Hip Hop that is played on the radio today owes more to the campus of Harvard than it does the streets of Harlem . Most Hip Hop fans can recite, verbatim,  the often parroted propaganda about how Hip Hop started in the parks of the Bronx in the late 70’s and went on to become the global enterprise that it is today. Like most myths, there is a shred of truth in this hype, however, the whole truth is hidden from the masses. Continue reading

Pressure Point Therapy can help relieve headaches, stiff neck and low back pain

Pressure point therapy increases blood flow to specific accu-pressure points along the neck and back, helping to relax muscles, decrease pain and promote healing.

For centuries, pressure point therapy has been used by many cultures to treat poor health. Sometimes referred to as “trigger points”, these tender spots may occur in a muscle and produce additional soreness or refer pain to other muscles or areas in the body.

Applying pressure point therapy to these areas can reduce pain and stiffness, restore function, increase range of motion and improve strength, posture and balance.
