Can some one please tell me why Amazon prices the same dolls different. Why are the AA Barbie Dolls $12 – 15 more then the same C doll. Have requested assistance from the company but have been put on eternal hold and my email have not been responded too. I wonder how the BBB would handle an issue like this.

That’s just awful. My guess is because of the difference in supply and demand, but am sad that they do it. For my own curiosity, I just did a comparison of the pet vet Barbie. C is $9.99 and AA is $19.99. So, no, this is not a joke.

I agree. I think its like the difference between clothing sizes. Obviously the more material they have to use, the price will go up. Same goes for the dolls. They have to use more dye to make the dolls, not just for african american, but for any doll of any color. I wouldnt worry too much about it, there are much bigger issues out there to be concerned with. And I dont think the BBB would really take this seriously, the companies aren’t doing it just because they’re african american dolls, it just seems so ignorant that people still pick little things apart and make them out to be something they’re not.

I agree, supply & demand. Even the Nintendo DS commands different prices for different colors. Mattel has no obligation to fix prices just for the sake of cultural sensitivity. You might see some changes if you raise a big fuss about it somehow, but until then, this is what the market forces have carved out.

So there’s a $10 manufacturing difference in the cost of dye? I think the supply and demand theory has more merit.

I was merely pointing out that there’s extra costs for materials. of course they’re going to mark it up.

I had the same issue with Hispanic dolls over a year ago, so this is nothing new. The exact same doll was a little more than $10 less for the Caucasian doll. I asked Amazon if they would extend the price to the Hispanic and AA dolls as well and was told “no” – upon pressing for a reason, I was essentially told that they are not in as high as demand so are costing them storage space. Of course, maybe they would turnover faster if the prices were the same. My daughter wanted a doll that looked like her, I didn’t like that the prices were unequal, so I told Customer Service as much and no longer buy dolls or doll accessories here even if that means spending more. It matters not to Amazon, but it’s the principle of the thing.

S. Reiter says:
I’m Caucasian and had an African American doll when I was a little girl. I loved her! When I saw her in the store I fell in love. She was beautiful. I’m thankful my mom didn’t make a big deal out of it, but then we do live in L.A. where people are more accepting of things like that. I agree that the pricing is unfair, but does your daughter really want that doll, anyway? You might be surprised. Don’t take it personally if she likes a Caucasian one. It will just go to show that kids are blank slates.

Caucasians are kind of like blank slates, too. Cause they’re white, til you add some color to them.

i have to agree with S. Reiter…. when i was a lil girl i had an african american cabbage patch doll and i loved her my grandmother thought differently and threw it away and got me a white one. i was not happy and i didnt understand why she took my doll away. i personally didnt think of the color of the doll.

Katie BH says:
I don’t think a price discrepancy for identical dolls of different color is acceptable regardless of supply and demand. Besides, according to the last census, Caucasians are no longer in the majority in the under-five age group. It’s lousy marketing strategy to risk angering so many people. BTW, I just check the Toys R Us site. Most of their dolls cost the same for all ethnicities. I did find that they have an African American version of the “Middleton Doll 13 inch Little Bailey Doll” priced LESS than the same dolls as Caucasian. Go figure.
